The cornea is the clear “window” on the front of the eye, which serves several purposes. It focuses light to pass through the eye, forming an image on the retina. It also creates a barrier to prevent infection, dust, and other harmful matter from the outside world. Many diseases can involve the cornea, and can range from infectious to inflammatory to immune-related. Some of the more common corneal diseases seen include:
- dry eye
- contact lens-related infections
- pink eye (conjunctivitis)
- keratoconus
- corneal abrasion
- corneal dystrophy
- shingles infection
- herpes simplex infection
- pterygium (tissue growth from the “white” conjunctiva of the eye onto the cornea)
The following are symptoms of corneal disease or injury:
- pain
- redness
- discharge from the eye
- light sensitivity
- “foreign body sensation”
- irritation
- blurred vision
- tearing
