Maria Esperanza Vergara Barbe, MD, began her medical training in the 6 year combined biomedical program at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, NY. She graduated magna cum laude with a Bachelor of Science degree in biology. Dr. Barbe then earned her doctor of medicine degree from Albany Medical College in Albany, New York.
Dr. Barbe completed her preliminary medicine internship at the Medical Center Hospital of Vermont in Burlington, Vermont. She continued her training with an Ophthalmology residency at Albany Medical Center/Lions Eye Institute in Albany, New York, where she served as chief resident during the final year. Dr. Barbe completed fellowship training in pediatric ophthalmology and adult strabismus at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City, Iowa.
She serves as an associate examiner for the American Board of Ophthalmology. She is a member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, the American Association for Pediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus, the North American Neuro-Ophthalmology Society, and the Pennsylvania Medical Society. Dr. Barbe specializes in pediatric and adult strabismus.
She is a managing partner at the Progressive Vision Institute. Dr. Barbe’s personal time is devoted to family life with her husband and 3 children. In addition to actively participating in her children’s activities, she enjoys running, field hockey, and lacrosse.
