Maria Esperanza Vergara Barbe, M.D., began her medical training at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, NY where she graduated magna cum laude with a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology. She earned her doctor of medicine degree from Albany Medical College in Albany, NY through the combined accelerated 6-year biomedical program with Rensselaer.
Dr. Barbe completed her preliminary medicine internship at the Medical Center Hospital of Vermont in Burlington, VT. She continued her training with an Ophthalmology residency at Albany Medical Center/Lions Eye Institute in Albany, NY where she served as chief resident during the final year. She completed fellowship training in pediatric ophthalmology and adult strabismus at the University of Iowa Hospital and Clinics in Iowa City, IA.
Dr. Barbe is board certified and specializes in pediatric and adult strabismus. She is a member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, the American Association for Pediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus, the North American Neuro-Ophthalmology Society, and the Pennsylvania Medical Society. She serves as an associate examiner for the American Board of Ophthalmology. She is a managing partner at the Progressive Vision Institute.
Dr. Barbe’s personal time is devoted to family life with her husband and 3 children. In addition to actively participating in her children’s activities, she enjoys running, field hockey, and lacrosse.
