About Us: History

Progressive Vision Institute (PVI), with locations in Pottsville, Wyomissing, Shamokin, and Philadelphia, provides state-of-the-art eye care for the entire family including comprehensive eye examinations, expert fitting of contact lenses and glasses, cataract, glaucoma and cornea disease treatment, macular degeneration and diabetic retinopathy evaluation and treatment, pediatric ophthalmology, as well as pediatric and adult strabismus and micro-pulse diode photocoagulation laser treatment.

Progressive Surgical Institute at the Pottsville location provides ambulatory surgical services including cataract with implant surgery, eyelid plastic surgery, and laser treatment. Progressive Laser Surgical Institute in the Wyomissing office offers refractive surgery including standard and customized LASIK vision correction, in addition to the surgical services provided at Pottsville’s surgical center.

Since it’s founding in 1986 by Solomon Luo, MD, FACS, FACS, Progressive Vision Institute – Eye Care Center has provided Schuylkill County with the highest quality eye care. Because of continued growth, an additional office and surgical location opened in Wyomissing in November of 2003, and two more offices in Philadelphia were added in early 2004. In 1999 Maria Barbe, MD, board certified pediatric ophthalmologist specializing in pediatric and adult strabismus joined the practice and currently works in all of the locations. The next year Progressive Vision Institute hired Shann Lin, MD, FACS, a board certified ophthalmologist specializing in macular degeneration, diabetic eye disease and vitreo-retinal surgery. In addition to Drs. Luo, Lin and Barbe, physicians on staff include; Anthony Grosso Jr., DO, FAOCO, board certified ophthalmologist and refractive surgeon; William Kellogg, MD, FACS, board certified ophthalmologist. Peggy Dixon, OD; Ann Marie Roberts Blehm, O.D.; Aaron R. Blehm, O.D.; and Irene Musten, OD, are our optometrists who specialize in contact lenses, glasses and general eye care. The newest member of the ophthalmology team is Scott Piette, DO, a glaucoma specialist who is qualified to perform glaucoma and cataract surgery.

The physicians and staff keep abreast of the latest eye care techniques and equipment through continuing education programs. This year PVI was one of the first practices in the country to acquire the latest generation diagnostic imaging devise, the High Speed ICG Heidelberg Retinal Angiography II (HRA II) for macular degeneration. The HRA II is capable of the highest image contrast and detail available. This device, along with digital fluorescein angiography (FA) and indocyanine green angiography (ICGA) images with 3-D resolution, will improve the diagnosis of retinal and choroidal pathologies such as diabetic retinopathy and macular degeneration.

PVI also has office locations in Shenandoah and Ashland that provide convenience for those patients who live outside the Pottsville area. The physicians welcome any new patients. For an appointment or questions, please call 570-628-4444 (Pottsville), 570-648-4444 (Shamokin) or 610-396-9999 (Wyomissing).
